Nikka Frontier brings a more affordable taste of Japan to the UK
With smoky malt from the historic Yoichi distillery, Nikka’s latest UK release offers a welcome entry point to one of whisky’s more expensive markets
Japanese whisky has become increasingly expensive in recent years, with some of the better-known bottles now well beyond the budgets of casual drinkers. So it’s encouraging to see Nikka introducing a more accessible expression, with Frontier arriving in the UK this month, exclusively through Majestic, priced at £33.
First launched in Japan in October 2024 to celebrate Nikka’s 90th anniversary, Frontier is a tribute to founder Masataka Taketsuru, one of the most influential figures in the history of Japanese whisky.
Taketsuru travelled to Scotland in 1918 to learn the art of whisky-making before returning to Japan, where he helped establish Yamazaki, the country’s first malt whisky distillery, for the company that would become Suntory. In 1934, he struck out on his own, founding Nikka and building the Yoichi distillery on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, where the cooler climate reminded him of Scotland.
That same distillery now plays a central role in Frontier, which is a world-blended whisky containing more than 51% malt, including heavily peated spirit from Yoichi. This brings a rich, malty character and gentle smokiness, while Nikka’s signature Coffey grain whisky adds sweetness and balance. Bottled at a generous 48% ABV and non-chill filtered, it also has enough strength to work well in a highball.
Nikka Coffey Malt, remains one of the standout whiskies in the producer’s regular range, and Frontier doesn’t quite reach the same heights in terms of richness and complexity. But there’s plenty to enjoy here, especially for anyone who likes a touch of peat without being overwhelmed by smoke.
It’s also good to see Nikka embracing the smaller 500ml format, something we’d welcome more of across the industry. Not everyone discovering whisky has the budget, or indeed the desire, to spend £60 or £70 on a full-sized bottle. Admittedly, £33 for 500ml works out at £46.20 for 700ml, so it’s not quite the bargain it first appears, but the lower initial outlay makes trying something new considerably easier.
The bottle itself features a prominent N on the front and an embossed shimenawa on the reverse, a traditional Japanese twisted straw rope associated with Shinto shrines. It’s a nod to Taketsuru’s family roots in sake brewing, with Nikka continuing the tradition of hanging these ropes above its pot stills.
Technically, Frontier is classified as a world-blended whisky rather than Japanese whisky, but with Yoichi malt at its heart, it offers an appealing introduction to one of Japan’s most celebrated producers. It might not be the finest Nikka you’ll ever drink, but as an affordable way into the range, you really can’t go far wrong.
Nikka Frontier is available from selected Majestic stores and online, priced at £33 for 500ml (48% ABV).
